What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the term for a group of common eye diseases that, if left untreated, are a leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma arises from high intraocular pressure (IOP) that damages the optic nerve; the part of your eye that sends images to your brain for visual processing.

At Kennedy Vision Health Center, we’ll put all our effort into protecting your eyesight by utilizing advanced technology and expertise. Our team can detect signs of glaucoma before it affects your vision and then create a custom management plan and explain every part of your care, so you feel comfortable and confident about your eye health.

The Two Main Forms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma, also known as the “silent thief of sight,” occurs invarious forms and can have differing symptoms. However, there are two main types of glaucoma that are the most common: open-angle and angle-closure.

What Is Open-Angle Glaucoma?

Open-angle glaucoma — the most common form — accounts for over 90% of glaucoma cases, typically develops over the course of many years, and can cause symptoms including reduced vision and peripheral vision loss. This results fromthe pathway between the cornea and the iris being partially blocked, slowing drainage, increasing fluid buildup, and raising IOP.

What Is Angle-Closure Glaucoma?

Angle-closure glaucoma is less common than open-angle but requires urgent attention to prevent vision loss. This type of glaucoma causes the iris to suddenly become swollen, severely restricting or completely clogging the drainage pathway. This, in turn, blocks fluid circulation and causes a rapid increase in IOP.

Early glaucoma deduction

Early Detection of
Glaucoma

Because glaucoma has no “cure” and no instantly recognizable, triggering symptoms that indicate its presence until vision loss occurs, early detection is essential for minimizing its impact on your eyes. One of your best lines of defense against glaucoma is to get an annual comprehensive eye exam. In our exams, we’ll use our advanced diagnostic technology, like non-contact tonometry and optical coherence tomography, to track even the slightest variations in your IOP and check your inner eye for damage caused by glaucoma.

With that information, we can effectively tailor our care to your vision needs with care plans designed to preserve your eyesight, health, and quality of life.
