What is diabetic eye disease?

There are a number of ways diabetes can affect your vision, but one of the more serious ways is through a complication known as diabetic retinopathy. This condition develops when abnormal blood vessels in your eyes begin to swell or leak. Diabetic retinopathy damages the retina, the part of your eye responsible for sending the images you see to your brain.

You likely won’t initially notice any of the symptoms of this condition at first, but as it develops, you may start to experience blurry vision, increased spots or floaters in your eyesight, dark or empty spots in your line of view, or trouble seeing at night or in low light. Our doctors can catch the early signs of diabetic eye disease during a comprehensive eye exam, before you suffer any vision loss.

The Benefits of Diabetic Eye Exams

We use state-of-the-art diagnostic technology like optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor your eyes, and we can sometimes even notice the signs of diabetes before other doctors can!
