What is myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a condition where the eye grows longer than usual. This affects its ability to bring light into your eye to see clearly, causing distant objects to look blurred. Myopia can’t be cured, but if it’s caught early during an annual comprehensive eye exam, we can limit its negative effects on your child’s sight. At Kennedy Vision Health Center, we can help slow the progression of your child’s nearsightedness through our myopia management plans and specialty eyewear.

What are the risks of myopia?

There has been a steady rise in the presence of myopia in children, thought to be caused by an increase in screen time on computers, phones, and televisions during school and play. Myopia, if left untreated, can lead to your child needing stronger, more frequent updates to their vision prescription and put them at risk for developing eye conditions later in life, such as glaucoma.

Does your child show signs of myopia?

Does your child blink frequently, squint to see clearly, or have blurry vision, eye strain, and headaches? They could have myopia, but don’t worry — we’re here to help!

Managing Myopia with Our Specialty Contact Lenses

The earlier myopia is diagnosed, the sooner our specialists can start to slow its progression to minimize its impact on your child’s vision. We offer revolutionary contact lens technology that can painlessly reshape your child’s eye, clarifying their vision and slowing the advancement of their nearsightedness.

Managing Myopia with Ortho-K Lenses

These gas-permeable lenses are specially designed for myopia and gently reshape your child’s cornea while they sleep at night. After they’re removed the following morning, your child will have clearer sight throughout the day! Ortho-K lenses are great for kids with dry eye, astigmatism, or who don’t want to wear daytime contacts.

Managing Myopia with MiSight® 1 Day Lenses

We also offer disposable, soft contacts created for children to wear during the day to control myopia. MiSight® 1 day lenses also provide your child with clear vision without the use of eyeglasses, giving them more lifestyle flexibility. These lenses are a great option for children who play sports or are not comfortable wearing contacts while they sleep.
