Advanced Equipment & Technology
Auto K Machine
The purpose of the Auto-K machine is to obtain an objective baseline distance prescription for the doctor to go off of while initiating refraction later on in the exam. More specifically, this machine helps evaluate the level of refractive error in each eye. This machine may also be used for pre-and-post refractive surgery patients. While using this machine, the technician will direct the patient to rest their chin and forehead on the corresponding areas of the Auto-K. Once the technician brings the refractometer into focus, the patient will be instructed to maintain eye contact with a farm image inside the machine. The farm image will go in and out of focus several times to measure each eye’s objective distance prescription.
IOP Machine
The purpose of the IOP machine is to measure the Intra Ocular Pressures of the patient’s eyes. High pressures may be associated with glaucoma disease or pose a risk to vision damage. For this machine, the patient will begin by placing their forehead on the forehead rest and looking straight ahead where they will see a few red lights. Once the patient has located the red lights, the technician will activate a green light for the patient to focus on. The patient will hold their eye open and a quick puff of air will be directed onto the patient’s eye. This process will be carried out for both eyes.
Topography Machine
The purpose of the Topography machine is to take advanced external photos that help the doctors evaluate surface structures of the eyes. Some of the unique features on this machine include dry eye evaluation imaging (meibomian glands, tearfilm break up time, tear meniscus height, etc.). While using this machine, the patient will be directed to rest their chin and forehead in the corresponding areas and look directly towards the middle of the rings at the camera. To take the various types of pictures on the machine, the technician will turn on the light and bring the camera closer to each of the patients’ eyes.
TopCon Lensometer
The Lensometer is used for reading prescription glasses that patients bring in for their appointment. The technicians or opticians will read glasses during the exam and the patient is not expected to do anything at this time.
Optos Optomap
The purpose of the Optomap is to take photos of the back of the eye for the Doctor to evaluate the patient’s retinal health. This machine is capable of taking both regular Optomap and Fundus photos. While using this machine, the patient will sit on a chair and put one eye in at a time to look at a light in the black circle. This light may turn blue, green, or red, depending on the distance needed for obtaining the image. Once the technician takes the picture, the patient will see a delayed horizontal green flash of light. Immediately after this flash, the same central light will appear to take another picture. The flash of light is bright, and may be difficult to obtain on light-sensitive patients.
i-Care Machine
The Purpose behind the i-Care machine is to provide reliable ocular pressure results for each eye. This is also commonly used for children under the age of 10 who are not old enough to do the IOP machine. For this machine, the patient will be sitting in an exam chair looking out into the distance. The patient will see a light in the middle of the machine where the probe is located while the top of the machine rests on their forehead. The patient will feel a tickle-sensation while the probe obtains pressure information.
Visual Field Machine
The purpose of the Visual Field machine is to evaluate if there are abnormal defects in a patient’s central and/or peripheral field of vision, and where these defects are. This machine can help the doctor evaluate and diagnose various eye diseases and concerns including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and potential retinal detachments. While using this machine, the patient will put their chin on the chin rest and forehead against the forehead rest. They will also be wearing an eye patch over one eye and holding a clicker in their dominant hand. Looking inside the machine, the patient will focus on a central target while different flashes of light pop up in various central and/or peripheral areas on the screen. The patient will be told to continue looking at the central target and to click the clicker in their hand each time they see a flash of light. Data for both eyes will be gathered individually for this machine.
TopCon 3D OCT-1 (3D Optical Coherence Tomography)
The purpose of the OCT machine is to take advanced cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve with a non-invasive laser. The common analogy we use to describe this machine is that it is similar to an MRI machine for the eyes. For this machine the patient will rest their chin and forehead on the corresponding areas and look directly into the machine. Depending on the type of image being taken, the technician may direct the patient to look in certain directions. Once the patient has located the desired target, they will take a few blinks and hold their eyes open (as directed by the technician) while the OCT scans their eye. There are no flashes of light associated with this machine. Each type of scan that is ordered by the doctor will be performed for both eyes individually.
Phoropter Compu Vision
The phoropter allows the doctor to refract the patient’s eyes and test binocular visual functions. This machine will help ensure the most accurate glasses prescription for each patient. During this portion of the exam, the doctor will direct the patient to rest their forehead against the bar so they can comfortably see through the lenses within the phoropter. From this point, the doctor will test different lenses for each eye, asking the patient which of the options they prefer. This process will be done for both distance and near vision. Before the doctor enters the room, the technician will set the phoropter using the results from the Auto-K machine and the Lensometer.
Slit Lamp
Sometimes referred to by the doctors as a microscope, the purpose of the Slit Lamp is to look closely at both internal and external conditions of the eye. This machine can be used to view progression of cataracts, abrasions or scratches on the cornea, view optic nerves, as well as many other factors for comprehensive and specialty exams. During this portion of the exam, the doctor will instruct the patient to rest their chin and forehead on the corresponding areas of the machine. Then the doctor will have the patient look in various directions while examining their eyes and communicate their findings to the patient afterwards.
