What is pink eye (Conjunctivitis)?

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is a condition that causes the conjunctiva — the clear tissue that covers the whites of your eyes and lines your inner eyelids — to become inflamed. This inflammation causes small blood vessels to become more visible, making your eyes look pink or red. Pink eye can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, as well as an allergic reaction to dust and pollution. The type of pink eye you have determines how contagious it is. Though pink eye is rarely vision threatening, we recommend early treatment to save your eyes from discomfort and prevent transmission to others.

How do I know if I have pink eye?

If you’ve ever woken up with so much discharge you can’t open your eyes, you probably had conjunctivitis. Other common signs and symptoms of pink eye include feelings of itchiness and burning in the eyes, swollen conjunctiva, and redness that doesn’t go. Pink eye can also cause discolored overnight discharge that crusts and makes your eyelids stick together, and a gritty sensation in the eye that feels like something is caught in it. Other things to look out for are light sensitivity, excessive tearing, and inflamed lymph nodes.

How We Treat Pink Eye

Pink eye treatment starts with figuring out the root cause of your conjunctivitis. Whether it’s from exposure to allergens and irritants, excessive contact lens use, or an underlying infection or virus: we’ll go over your symptoms and examine your eyes thoroughly to determine the source. From there, we can start your conjunctivitis treatment, typically through steroidal or antibiotic eye drops, medication, and symptom management so you can find relief until it clears up. With he proper treatment, pink eye typically clears up within a few days.

Why choose Kennedy Vision Health Center for pink eye treatment?

While you might consider going to your general practitioner for pink eye treatment, it’s better to see a dedicated eye doctor. Though GPs can diagnose and prescribe medication for pink eye, you often won’t receive the thorough treatment often required for cases of pink eye. At Kennedy Vision Health Center, our doctors operate in a family-friendly environment solely to treat your eyes and have the advanced technology to determine the best course of action to do so!
